#67 A rooftop garden!

So after the (mixed!) success of my noticeboard i've decided to try one of the ideas that was strongly supported on it which was the rooftop garden.

Our body corprate doesnt have the funds or inclination to invest in this kind of thing and my neighbour Daniel used to have a lovely herb and ornamental garden going before he left for greener pastures so i thought why not start a community based one.

The idea is simple : each of us brings one plant .. and let's see what we can grow!

I place the first plant, my friend the succulent

An optimistic but lonely fellow assumes the corner position.

And we wait ...

Insane in the Membane

As the comments below suggest my little Garden Party had the body corporate very concerned indeed. The Strata Manager letterboxed everyone saying my party was off and placed signs up - somoene also removed my signs the day before the event.

That was a bit mean i thought - especially when i made it clear i understood the issue regarding the membrane and that i had scaled back our gathering really to be a meeting of neighbours to discuss the issues and perhaps get to know eachother a little in the process. So i placed up a sign to this effect in the morning and found this one promptly torn down also.

At this stage i started to fee like this was becoming a bt ridiculous and given i'd invited people up t the roof in including Terry who can bareluy get out of the apartment anymore I was determined to meet my guests on the roof on Saturday ...

The Goon Squad

Well you can imagine my surprise when i popped up on the roof at midday to find not one but two security guards! Now i've seen enough Matrix movies to know how to handle them but really i didn't want to have to hurt the guys. Bobby and his mate were actually quite nice blokes and understood they were dealing with a dangerous little man who also had a mean looking succulent as backup so were open to a proper chat about things.

So after discussing their orders and my determination to stay on the roof  i decided to call the police just to clarify the fact that if they tried to remove me from the roof that i could call on the police to escort the lovely chaps (who in the end were just doing their job) off the building and into a paddy wagon.

Constable Smith (?) from Kings Cross police was incredibly patient and helpful and across a thirty minute phone convo between all parties concluded (a) Bobby and his mate couldn't (legally) physically touch me even if they wanted too (which they didnt) and (b) it was a civil matter until one of us actually did do something physical to the other.

So what we had was a mexican standoff (but no mexican food!). At that point my neighbour Raza joined us - he's actually on the body corporate and we talked through the issues as the sun broke through the clouds much to Bobby's delight. Raza was apologetic about the outcome and certainly wasnt into having security on the roof - but he also explained the situation from his perspective. It was a very constructive chat and really we ended the conversation better connected than before i think which is a cool outcome.

Unfortunately due to the bad weather and bad sportsmanship from the strata people the turn out wasnt quite what i'd hoped for, however my long suffering girlfriend Vaike soon arrived with a plate of food and we chatted for a while with the boys then headed downstairs for ...

A party in my apartment!

As it happened my friends next door Simon and Melinda - aka The Falls - had decided to also have a party to promote their Uncharted competition efforts (they are coming third from a field of thousands apparently). While they were intending to have it on the roof initially (unbeknown to me i swear!) after the kerfuffle i caused just trying to get a few neighbours up for a wee garden party they decided to have it in their apartment - and well the least i could do was open up mine for the party too!

So in the end we enjoyed an extraordinary afternoon listening to some seriously talented people playing live sets in our apartments! It was such a cool vibe and the crew such lovely people i was just a little sad for all the people in the building who missed out - though i was kind of glad we were all nice and warm in the apartments instead of on the roof as the rain bucketed down!

Highlights were many but music maestro Kent's rendition of Bruce Springstein's Dancing in the Dark on my Piano Accordian really made my day. Ohh and i was interviewed for MTV and managed to throw a plug in for live local so that was a nice bonus!

The plants should represent the personalities of their owners!  You could even label them with your name...

Kate, that's an awesome idea. If the plants had laminated cards in them you could describe the care requirements (how much sun, how much water, etc.) and indicate who contributed it to the collective garden. I wish my roof was gardenable!

YEs i love that idea - though its a bit clandestine as the body corporate puts up nasty legal notices stating EVEN plants constitute a breach of some by-law (!) so it migh have to be anonymous for now (unless they read this!) .. i met with the neighbours on Sunday and we had a drink up there and they're all keen so we'll see if we can get some friends for my lonely succulent soon!

i was just thinking that the 'optimistic but lonely' succulent resembled its owner!

Hey DG, I would love an update on this project - did you get more plants, did the 'optimistic but lonely' succulent survive?

Glad you asked Camille! (Is this THE Camille btw?!) The live local challenge has inspired me to get this experiment off the ground, so next weekend we're having a garden party on the roof with neighbours each bringing a plant and some food.  Its going to be fun and very green - ill report back next weekend after the party.

Yes - it's THE Camille ;-)  Hope the garden party is a success. Have posted my own and opposite experiement - check out #113

That's very cool Camille .. i'll continue the Rooftop Garden Experiment as of this weekend - I prepared the invites and primed the neighbours the past few days so fingers crossed we can get it greener, even get some edibles and herbs up there maybe! Good luck with your experiment - look fwd to the invite to the opening ;)

One might think that the body corp just wants to be inconsiderate and spoil your fun.  However, I have spent a considerable amount of time investigating green skins and other options for the roof top, unfortunately with the massive cost of upgrading our buildings fire prevention system there is just no money to provide this at the moment.

One EC member even went to the trouble of contacting a roofing engineer to ensure we were not being unfair - he informed us that the membrane is only 1 - 1/2 mm thick of a rubbery substance, anything sharp, heels, chair legs, chairs being dragged/moved or cigarette burns can rupture and damage the surface.

The membrane has only just been replaced as it had become badly damaged so you will have to forgive us if we are a little protect of it - it was very very expensive to replace.

I appreciate the atmosphere and community you are trying to create - I think it's a fabulous idea but for now you may have to think outside the square - we are very lucky to have a fabulous garden and paved area with seating all around the front of the building so why not gather there –

The body corp has a legal and financial responsibility to look out for what is best for all the owners – that does not mean we don’t want to make the building a pleasant place to live.  I hope you can trust that when we reject proposals it’s not without good reason many of us do actually live in the building and want the same things you do – hopefully in the future we will have a usable rooftop.

Just a headsup, "Anonymous" and i spoke at length today on the phone and she was very polite and explained that it really is a engineering issue NOT a control/liability or anti-community thing. At first i wanted to speak to the aforementioned engineer but after chatting with my new body corporate friend (and another fine lady ive known for years who's also on the body corporate) and pondering the situation i've concluded that i can (alas!) see the body corporate argumen.

It's a shame and certainly a sad end to an optimistic experiment but the Darley Street Rooftop Garden will not go ahead. I will however hold a wee rooftop meeting of minds tomorrow to discuss the issue and colllect what plants are offered and perhaps plant them on our street below.

I love a  good social justice fight (its why in part i set up Digital Eskimo, to give voice to the disempowered and to help right a few wrongs in this world) however i cannot honestly say this is truly about social justice. I'd certainly defend our right to meet on the roof and shall be accessing the roof tomorrow to catch up with neighbours however there wont be a garden at this time.

I'll report back tomorrow on how the rooftop meeting goes - who knows something good may come of all this yet!

Classic! Rooftop party becomes civil disobedience becomes touchy-feely neighbourliness with Body Corporate people. This experiment cannot be termed a failure!

Inspiring stuff Dave!

I am looking to rally the neighbours for a rooftop garden on parkes st kirribilli. Would be visible from the harbour bridge!

Need engineers report as I know a friend who had fresh greens and soil falling through her collapsed roof, with the remains of the rooftop garden above.

this idea will take off, just need some adventurous pilots

Picture of user DaveGravina

You're right Tsung, probably best to be careful on the roof and engineers reports will ensure its safe however once you go down that path you do get caught up in the red tape of Body Corporates and so on so be prepared for a drawn out process! As you say though we need preceedents so that others are inspired to accept the green roof idea. Good luck and dont forget to document your experiment here!

I would like to know how you and the rooftop are going.

I know about membranes but what about a 'barefoot party.'?

If rubbish bins can sit on a membrane why not a plastic pot?

Talk to the Body Corporate about covering the membrane, which will protect it from the sun, double its life and stop the worry on their part of damage by heels etc.

Pavers, decking or even forms of astro turf - (ugh)

are a lot cheaper than replacing the membrane every ten years and the angst.  Hence a better community and even some plants.

I just wanted to know if the Sucurity Guard was Bobby from Wetpac - he is a classic!!
