#63 Organic home wedding

Subiaco is a farm near Walcha in th New England region of NSW. The farm goes by the business name of Australian Organic Herbs, and the main produce there for many years has been Echinacea. This farm is the home of my good friend Hamish, and also of his parents, Phil and Katie.

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to have the chance to travel up to Subiaco, for the very special occasion of Hamish and Sara's wedding. In keeping with their own philosophies and with the philosophies of the farm, Hamish and Sara decided to make their wedding a very "organic" affair. The wedding took place by the dam at the back of the farm. Along with the charming and truly unique ceremony, the couple made many efforts to hold their wedding in a sustainable way:

  • many of the guests came up from Sydney (a 6-hour drive), and an effort was made to organise carpooling, in order to cut down on costs and on fuel consumption for everyone
  • All food at the wedding was 100% organic, and much of it was made from produce grown right there on the farm (and it was all delicious!)
  • The location on the farm was pristine and calm, out of mobile phone reception and well away from any main roads
  • Guests were given Echinacea pot plants and jars of organic chutney as freebie gifts
  • Everyone was asked not to bring a conventional present, but instead to pay a small amount of money to sponsor the planting of a new herbal tree on the farm
  • All guests were welcome to stay at the farm before and after the wedding, to further help carpooling and to let people relax and enjoy the natural surrounds (and to recover from the long journey)

The Blum family come especially from Switzerland to see Sara get married - a travelling Swiss folk music family!

Even the wine was organic!

Hamish and Sara embrace after making their wedding vows, with
traditional Greco-Roman wreaths on their heads and a knotted rope tying
the wreaths together.

Hamish's grandma is 90 years old, and said:

I'll remember this day for as many more years as the dear Lord gives me.

that's so great. i went to a 'green wedding' talk at the sustaino living festival in melbourne on the weekend and got lots of ideas for mine. i can't recall the exact figures but when you look at average carbon use in a year for your average urban person, and then look at the average output for a wedding, it was a MASSIVE difference. i want ours to be carbon-neutral at least, if not carbon-negative somehow.

one idea was to have a pre-loved wedding dress, so if anyone on the site has one, or knows a friend or relative with one gathering dust somewhere, who is open-minded enough to let me 're-fashion' it, get in touch :)
