The local community mucked in big time on Sunday 22 May 2011 to set up four raised bed communal gardens in Waverley Park. Locals contributed hands, smiles, shared food and even a few cute dogs for company.
Waverley Park Communal Garden BIG DIG
These raised bed gardens were set up using the Wicking method: by digging in a lined pond under the raised beds, you can save on the need to water, in fact, all going well, this method waters the plants from below rather than above. The raised beds we used are over a metre high, so fingers crossed the water can capillary up that far. High beds were used so folks don't need to bend down and dogs n cats r less likely to jump up and do their doo's. I recently moved from one of the densest inner city communities to the burbs and the move has made me reflect on how place/geography determines our resilience.
Following a number of requests from mebers of the public, activists and social change leaders, I'm interested in hearing from anyone who'd be supportive of developing Live Local action groups in your neighbourhood?
