#228 Getting to know your barista part deux: get those used coffee grounds!

It is estimated that global coffee production is over 7.25 billion kilograms per year - quite a lot of java, no?

And what do we do with the spent coffee grounds once our cuppas have been brewed? They don't have to end up in the bin. Spent coffee grounds are rich in nutrients and beneficial for gardening and composting - and can even be used in bio-fuel development.

This site (one of many) gives you some ideas for what to do with used coffee grounds:

Coffee grounds are also a significant percentage (and a heavy part) of the waste stream for many retailers. Via its "Grounds for Your Garden" program, Starbucks offers its spent coffee grounds free to the public on a first-come, first-served basis at its retail locations . . . but what about your local brew house?

Soo . . . the next time your chatting up your local barista, why not broker a deal for grabbing those used coffeee grounds?

Adopt a barista, target your break room, help your coffee shop do the right thing  Would like to hear about efforts Australia-wide to remove coffee grounds from the waste stream . . . good luck!

It was a little awkward, but asked my local barista if they would mind me grabbing their used grounds for use in my compost/garden.  They have been very receptive and have worked it out so that their team leaves their used grounds on top of the bin in a bag) for me to pick up after work.  The secret, I think, is making it as easy for the coffee shop as possible and yourself.  Picked up another 5kg tonight!
