#159 Worldwide Neighbourhood Block Party!

Living in a big city its so easy to be disconnected. For a long time I’ve wished I knew my neighbours better but I’ve never taken any action. Well... I decided to do something about it.

I am creating an annual day called “Say ‘hey!’ to your neighbour day” which will include an event called “The Sydney-wide Neighbourhood Block Party”.

It’s about raising awareness and bringing back the beauty of friendship and connection to our experience of living in a big city.

I have started door-knocking in my street, and introducing myself to my neighbours, and without exception, every single person I speak to is excited by the idea, and is interested to contribute by either helping to organise and/or attend such an event. It is a clear reflection of support for the idea and really indicates the community’s strong desire for connection.

Please contact me to discuss leadership opportunities in the project.

Hi, This sounds like a great event and could benefit from being tied in with Neighbour Day http://www.neighbourday.org/ It's not til March but may give a greater impact to your event as it's a nationwide thing

Hi Eleanor :) thanks for your message and the link, it's a great help! I've sent the organiser of Neighbour Day some info on my idea, I'd really like them to take on the concept of the "Worldwide Neighbourhood Block Party" and use it to promote Neighbour Day 2010. Do you have an interest in neighbourhoods and community yourself?

Hi Gillian,

Good on you, I hope you can tie this in. Yes, I'm interested in community and local food production, and it's good that this website connects like minded people like this :)

What you have in mind with block parties is really good for reducing social isolation, making people feel safer and creating more understanding between people. It might be best to think about 'partnering' with Neighbour Day. For example if they are keen they could promo the concept through their channels, then you could organise a block party which they could feature as a bit of a flagship, showing other people what's possible. It would probably take a couple of years of Neighbour Days for it to gain traction, but you could light the way so to speak. Not sure if this was what you had in mind anyway. I guess Neighbour Day being a not for profit would have the profile but not the resources, so having a number of block parties at grass roots level which they could help promo could be an effective way of partnering to make this happen. What do you think?

Hi Gillian and Eleanor,

This is important stuff. Re-connecting people in neighbourhoods is one of our great challenges and thsi is a very good way of starting the re-connection. I'm flat out with Permaculture and Transition Sydney activities but keen to help and promote the idea.

Peter

Hi Gillian,

Did you get any further with this and with Neighbour Day? If you want to chat or need some assistance I'm happy to help with brainstorming etc.

Eleanor
