#146 Living Vegetarian
About to arrive in Australia, I thought I'd start a list of all the vegetarian friendly places I come across & I'm hoping some of you can help me along the way.
I'll be starting in Brisbane, then moving onto Sydney & settling in Melbourne... & hopefully eating myself crazy on the way.
Doing a google search, I was saddened to find some of my old favourite haunts in Brisbane have closed down in the last 5 years. Where am I to go now?
Luckily a few still stand...
Govindas- Elizabeth St, Brisbane. Thankfully we can always rely on the hare krisna community for reliable vegetarian food wherever we go. Govindas however is pretty exceptional food, healthy & often using ingredients from their own gardens. Not suitable for vegans as they use ghee.
Huo Fo Vegetarian Court- Sunnybank Shopping Centre, Brisbane. This restaurant specializes in "fake-style" vege-meats & will fool/convert any carnivore. Amazing food & huge selection. I cannot wait to revisit this favourite. Stand out dishes I remember- lemon "chicken", crispy fried "chicken" & sizzling pepper "steak". They also have a frozen section where you can buy cook-at-home meals.
Maha Latchmi Indian Supermarket- McWhirters building, Fortitude Valley. This is the place for all your lentil-y needs. A great selection of indian-based vegetarian ingredients & also a small selection of hot snacks available. Great roti-rolls & samosas I remember.
Fundamental Foods (fondly refered to as Fundies)- Given Tce, Paddington, Brisbane. A huge selection of vegetarian/vegan/organic grocery supplies & a bulk food section for those reducing their waste.
I'll be adding to the list as I find new places on my journey & please add your favourites in the comments below too. All cities, all cuisines... but all vegetarian please. :)

hi emily, my favourite in sydney is bodhi vegetarian yum cha, at cook and phillip park in the city (city end of william st). not sure of its vegan credentials, but it's YUM!
earth foodstore in gould st, bondi beach: also YUM. all vegetarian and they are well-versed on explaining what's vegan too. their breakfasts are SO SIMPLE and SO GOOD (rye toast, avocado, egg etc, doesn't sound much but you gotta try it)
the Iku chain are all veg and macrobiotic. only open daytimes. delish. (darlinghurst, bronte, bondi beach, glebe, balmain)
also, not sure if it's still there, but UNSW had a good vegetarian in one of its food courts (at least, it did back in my day...when the dinosaurs walked the earth!)
Jed's Café near Bondi Beach is one of the few places I've found in Sydney that offers scrambled tofu for brunch. I also like Madame Chu's for vegan Chinese and Peace & Harmony for vegan Thai.
yeah jed's is great, you're right! where's madame chu's and peace & harmony?
All of these sound great. I'm so hungry right now, definitely gonna try Bodhi vegetarian yum cha. Usually yum cha is really limited if you're vegetarian.
Madame Chu's is on … Pitt St. in the city somewhere near Liverpool. Peace & Harmony is on … Erskine St also in the city, nearish to Sussex.
We need a Fundies here in Sydney. There's a perfect market here.
oohh i'm gonna try those jmac; maybe we shld suggest a DE lunch there?
Sorry I left this hanging so long...
Firstly, airlines-
Virgin Australia has 3 options for "vegetarians": vegetarian, asian-vegetarian (which I assume is no lacto) & vegan.
I was quite impressed they had the options. I was less impressed when I ate my meal though. Not as good as Arab Emirates or Air New Zealand on the food quality. Oh well, what do you expect from airline food? :P
Kuan Yin in Fortitude Valley - Brisbane is great. They have yummy asian vege meals - some can be made vegan and are cheap.
If you are in Newtown - Sydney then you have to try Green Gourmet which has cook to order meals as well as a huge buffet of vege and vegan delights. I have hear that the Green Palace is great too.
There are lots of vegan goodies in Newtown check 'em out http://www.vegansocietynsw.com/vs/html/guidetonewtown.html
There used to be a great vegetarian restaurant on Pitt St which had the best yum cha but I think it has closed down now. Madame chu's is pretty good too.
Hope this assists your mission to eat your way through our major cities. ;)
I've been in Australia last year. It was awesome! It's totally different world! I really like your country guys! I love nature and you are the one who saved it. Thank you for it!
