#124 getting to know your barista!

This morning I was in Zest, Sydney Road Balgowlah getting caffeine for myself after a hectic acupuncture session and a hot chocolate for my sick big girl at home. Morcheeba (The Sea) was playing on the ipod/speakers and that got me on a whole memory lane trip. 90's hiphop etc. The coffee guy and I started chatting big time about the bands of that era - massive attack, porthishead, everything but the girl and then we even moved on to the Presets before he had to send me on my way and attend t the next customer. I loved it. He and I were probably 20 years apart in age but we connected and had a really nice chat. What I also liked was the funny sign on the coffee machine which unfortunately we didn't even get time to chat about (maybe next week).  I've decided that I'm going to try to get to know all the people making coffee for me - not just the obligatory how's your day been? but something a bit more meaningful and interesting. Let's do it... and report in....

i've never seen this before but what a great idea! stopped me from checking my email/twitter on the iphone and got me engaging!!

Nice! I also find that the places where I become acquainted with the staff are the places to which I'm most likely to return. Buying stuff is usually a bit uniform and mechanical at the best of times, but it's a different experience when you like the people you interact with at the market/café/whatever.

Great idea. Having spent a good decade of my life on 'the other' side of the counter, it makes such a huge difference to a barista's day to have meaningful interactions, not just the skimmed surface again and again! Just a note though, sometimes baristas can get a bit 'chatted out', so read and respect the occasional friendly silence too.
