#116 a very green 'green thumb'
been doing exorbitant amounts of navel-gazing this year; did a 'creativity course'....looking for meditative tasks...wanting to live more 'greenly'...and now, experimenting with 'living locally'..and guess what the recurring item has been betwixt all these quests of mine? *grow stuff*! vegies, to be specific!
so...following will be a chronicle of my very first 'go' - in other words, the green 'green thumb', warts 'n all;

Hi, another great source of seeds is Eden Seeds, they have heirloom and organic seeds. They also have a fabulous links page [list of contacts in the menu] with contacts for just about anything you might want to grow!
Another easy thing to grow now is garlic - get a couple of organic bulbs, break the cloves apart and stick them in a pot of soil with the tips just under the surface. They should be good to harvest in October(ish).
Have fun ;-D
Another great website is www.plantagenda.com.au which includes Companion Planting. The Seed Bible, that comes with the PLANT-A-GENDA box tells you what to plant when and with what!
Good point Deni, and a big green thumbs up to you Vaike for giving this experiment a go. My (sadly rather limited) understanding of Permaculture is that you need to plant certain plants with other plants to create a mini ecosystem that is bug resistant and of course the added benefit is variety in your vegie garden. So while KISS is a great motto in life generally maybe it's really Keep It System-centric Stupid when it comes to vegie gardens?
Permaculture is very involved and a bit of a 'too hard basket' case. Dave, I think you are talking about Companion Planting which is much easier to digest and implement. Always remember that fennel has no friends and mint and parsley have a long and deep dislike for each other.
Damn i love fennel.
... it may be a veggie patch outcast but in the kitchen, it has a merry time - here is an easy and delicious one http://twurl.cc/10dc

Hey Vaike, how are your onions going? And have you ventured further afield?
Here is a great idea for apartment dwellers!

Hi Vaike - you are on the right track. Starting to grown your own really is simple once you get going. Diggers are brilliant too - I have used themf or years for all my seeds.
Have a go at growing potatoes this year. You can plant them from August (in most parts of Aus) and you will be rewarded with beautiful gourmet potatoes for Christmas.
Here is an ABC fact sheet on growing potatoes in a small space.
I am running out of space in the yard and want to explore the idea of Community Farming ... when I get the time.
Tis the season to plant potatoes. Last night found a book on the street from 1974 with 100 ways to cook those tasty tubers. Potatoes never go out of style!
my planta-genda has arrived!
